Project Description:
There are three primary ecosystems within which the food chains and food webs of the Arctic are established: land (or terrestrial), fresh water and marine. These larger ecosystems are made up of smaller, more localized and specialized ecosystems, each of which is defined by characteristic food chains and food webs.
The complexity of Arctic food chains and food webs is demonstrated in an Inuit and James Bay Cree environmental and ecological knowledge study that was carried out in the southeastern Hudson Bay region. The diagram shows the large number of interconnected species and food chains forming an intricate food web. It also clearly illustrates the level of knowledge about the region's ecological systems that Inuit and Cree possess.
