Reading digital sources: a case study in ship's logs
Ben Schmidt
Project Description:
Ben Schmidt uses ships logs from the National Oceans and Atmospheric Administration to illustrate the use of digital technology in historical analysis. The log data is incompatible with traditional modes of analysis, while it is not as well-defined as evidence as the usual digital textual databases. Schmidt uses machine learning techniques to help make sense of the data and illustrate interesting subsets, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the historical perspective on studying this information in aggregate. The final visualization illustrates ship tracks in black and visually illustrates the expansion of the American whaling industry through time.
