Project Description:
The publishers of Popular Science commissioned this visual exploration of their magazine and its 140-year archive. Thorp and Hansen produced a graphic exploring the evolution of technical and cultural terms. The clusters are grouped by decade, containing atoms representing issues of the magazine which are colored according to the colors of the issue covers. Word frequency histograms visualize the issue-by-issue evolution of the frequency of terms like "software" and "bakelite".
